You’re probably asking “where do I start now”?

So now that you’re ready to get started let’s cover a few things to think about to answer the “where do I start” question. The first thing I suggest you consider is, what exactly do you want to achieve? Then you want to think about what assistant you want to use. Such as the Google Assistant, Alexa etc., if you are ready use one I’d stick with it. Then you can start to think about the smart devices you need to achieve your goal.

One of the biggest mistakes I made when I started was just going crazy buying a bunch of smart lights. While you do want smart lights you should think about how you use the lights to decide the best route. Let’s take my living room lights for example. I put in 4 Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance. They offer a 3 pack with a Philips Hue Bridge so I had to buy one Philips Hue Single bulb to fill my fixture.

I quickly realized realized I don’t really have a need to turn each light on and off independently, or change their colors. I could have accomplished my intended goal by simply using a smart switch. Such as the Kasa Smart Dimmer Switch, which I ended up using in other rooms.

You do have to remove your current switch and install the smart switch. But the cost savings outweighs the time to do that. It’s definitely something you can do yourself if you are a little handy around the house.

Things to think about.

The Philips Hue products are amazing! They are compatible with all of the voice assistants, work very well and are very reliable. However they are a little pricey so you definitely need to consider your budget. Of course I have found that you get what you pay for. Some of the other brands I have tried have been a nightmare and I ended up going with the Hue devices anyway.

I could have saved a bunch of money and achieved the same result in that particular instance. There are some lights that you’ll want to use smart bulbs instead of a smart switch. Sometimes the wiring is not compatible, or you want that individual control.

Like if you want to turn your house into a disco lol. This is why it is very important to consider what you want to achieve. Then determine the best way to do that with the budget you have.

Final thoughts.

There are so many options available now and as I move through things I’ll be getting into more detailed recommendations of what to use and why. I think this will give you a little food for thought as you begin to set your plan in motion.
