Smart home devices have become increasingly popular because of their ability to add more convenience. They can help you save money, time, and energy by providing automated functions for routine tasks. While smart lights are some of the most common home devices, there are others worth considering.

In this post, we’ll discuss smart home devices that aren’t lights. If you’re looking for more innovative and functional smart devices that can improve your daily living, read on!

Smart Thermostats

One of the most practical smart devices to have in your home is a smart thermostat. It can keep your home comfortable while reducing your energy usage and utility bills. These thermostats can automatically adjust the temperature settings based on your behavior and preferences.

For example, I have a split unit home and have 1 Nest Learning Thermostat downstairs and 1 Nest Smart Thermostat upstairs. The basic smart thermostat doesn’t have the learning feature and the broad furnace/ac compatibility as the Learning Thermostat, it’s important to know what type of units you have before buying one. That allows me to adjust the temperature for the upstairs and downstairs separately through my smartphone. It also learns your schedule and adjusts the temperature accordingly, meaning you don’t have to worry about manually adjusting the temperature when you leave or come back home.

Another nice addition to that is Nest has these little temperature sensors that you can place anywhere in your home. They connect to your existing network and you can use them instead of the thermostat to control temperature. Our bedroom doesn’t seem to have the best air movement and often runs colder or hotter than the living room where the thermostat is. This allows me to use the bedroom’s temperature to control the thermostat keeping that room the temperature we want.

Smart Locks

Smart locks provide an additional layer of security for your home. They can operate using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or a mobile app, which grants you access without having to use a physical key.

There are several smart lock brands that offer different types of security features and styles. Depending on your needs, you can choose from a variety of options to make sure your home is as secure as possible. Some brands offer keyless entry, while others provide more traditional locks with keys. Many smart locks come with additional features like automatic locking, and remote access.

I do not have any smart locks but if I were going to buy one I would probably go for the Google Nest x Yale Lock since I already have an extensive list of Google Home devices and I know it will integrate without issue.

Smart Home Speakers

Smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home are very popular for their integration with smart home devices. They allow you to control your other smart devices through voice commands or by tapping the device, making your home more convenient and accessible.

Besides managing your smart home devices, you can use these speakers to give you information like the weather forecast or play music while you’re cooking or relaxing. Their digital assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant are intuitive and responsive, making them excellent choices for home entertainment and management.

The Google Nest Audio is another great choice if you have a Google Home/Assistance setup already running, they sound great and come in several different colors.

The Alexa Echo Studio is another excellent choice if you have a smart home already running the Alexa assistant and devices. There is also a large selection of other manufacturers that offer excellent products so just do a little research and find what works best for you.

Smart Motion Detectors

Smart motion detectors are designed to detect any movement or activity within their set area. They utilize sensors to detect changes in temperature, vibrations, and sound to detect the presence of a person or animal. Smart motion detectors are a great way to help protect your home from intruders. They can alert you when someone is trying to enter your property or access an area they shouldn’t be able to. They’re also great for providing peace of mind when you’re away.

Smart motion detectors can also be used to detect movement within a certain area. They can trigger lights to turn on automatically and then shut off after some time. This is a great way to conserve energy while providing convenience.

I have 2 Philips Hue Indoor Motion Sensors, one in our walk-in closet and one under the bed. The closet sensor is to control the two Philips Hue bulbs in the ceiling when we enter the closet it will turn the lights on. The one under the bed will turn on certain lights during certain hours, so my wife doesn’t have to walk through a dark house in the middle of the night. I have the lights set to go out after 15 minutes of no motion detected.

Smart Home Appliances

Also, there are smart appliances, such as washers & dryers, dishwashers, and refrigerators. These can be monitored remotely to make sure they are running efficiently. They can also be programmed with your own specific settings.

Smart appliances provide convenience and efficiency that traditional appliances cannot match. With smart home technology, managing your household has never been easier!

Smart fridges provide a convenient way to manage your groceries. Apart from keeping your food fresh, they have built-in cameras to see what you have and make your grocery lists without opening the fridge.

Wi-Fi connectivity for syncing videos, and pictures, and playing music.

I have a Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator and a Samsung Smart Dishwasher. The refrigerator has a built-in speaker and has integration with other smart speakers. It also has a nice big touchscreen to be able to use to set the settings, add it to your Wi-Fi, and have it stream pictures you set in a specific folder. It also has a built-in Alexa hub if you use Alexa in your home it’s a seamless integration. There’s also support for the Google Home assistant and if you run the SmartThings hub it can sync to Google through SmartThings.

It even has an app that tracks grocery expiry dates and sends notifications to your phone when you need to restock. But my favorite feature is the huge screen that I use to scroll through family pictures on when it is idle. The dishwasher allows me to track and manage water usage and manage any custom settings I have set.

In Conclusion:

Smart home devices are not limited to smart lights and there are many other products than just the ones I’ve mentioned here. Several other devices can make your home life easier and more convenient. Each of these devices has unique features and benefits that can save time, energy, and money for homeowners. Using these devices can improve your home living experience.
