So, you’ve just got your hands on a Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug, and you’re thrilled to integrate it into your smart home. Let’s dive in and discover why this handy little device is a must-have and how incredibly easy it is to set up. Today, we’re looking into solving a pesky little problem that’s been bugging me. I have some low-voltage lights that illuminate our front yard that I recently had my landscaper repair. Well, they look great now, but switching the timing for them on and off has been a manual task that could use some modernization. Enter the TP-Link Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug. So, let’s jump right into it!
The Problem at Hand
As fall approaches, the days grow shorter. This means my outdoor lights need frequent adjustments to their on and off times. The current setup involves messing with these tiny pins that I have to push in or pull out to set the timing. If that’s not enough, any power outage throws the entire schedule off balance. So, it’s high time for an upgrade!
Why Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug?
In my search for a Matter-enabled outdoor plug, I came up empty. However, I already have a Kasa Outdoor Plug for my back porch lights, and it’s been working like a charm. With the Kasa app already installed on my phone, adding another device is a breeze. This plug offers easy Google Assistant or Alexa integration for sunset and sunrise options, along with other time-based triggers. Moreover, this is a two-outlet device, so you’ve got some flexibility there. Time to unbox this baby!
Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug Unboxing and Setup
The unboxing process is as straightforward as it gets. The device comes with a mounting bracket to secure it to a wall, which is a neat touch. Although the cord isn’t particularly long, it’s sufficient for most outdoor setups. After unwrapping the device, it’s time to get it set up.
Upon plugging the Kasa Outdoor Plug in, the LED starts flashing orange and green, indicating readiness for pairing. In the Kasa app, simply tap the “+” symbol and follow the on-screen instructions. In no time, the device connected to my Wi-Fi network. I named the plug “Landscape Lights” and placed it in a newly created room named “Front Porch” in the app. Setting this up took no time at all, a testament to how user-friendly the Kasa ecosystem is.
Taking It Outside
Next, I moved the device outdoors and connected it to the power source for my low-voltage lights. At this point, I also pushed in all the timer pins on the manual box, effectively setting it to run 24/7. But don’t worry, the actual on-and-off times are now controlled by the Kasa Smart Plug via Google Home automation.
The Final Step
After connecting the device, I tested it from the Kasa app to make sure it was functioning as expected. A tap on my phone was all it took to control the lights. To add a cherry on top, I also set up some triggers in Google Home to control it via automation.
Setting up the Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug was incredibly straightforward. This ease of use is precisely what smart home devices should offer. Not only did I solve my timing issue, but I also gained a new level of control and flexibility over my outdoor lights. Below is an Amazon link to the smart plug and the Google Home device I use.
